Today, Councilmember Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson and her husband, Arthur “Buzz” Clarkson, rode aboard the USCG Eagle as it sailed into the Port of New Orleans for the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the start of Navy Week.
Councilmember Clarkson and her husband were honored to be guests of Rear Admiral Roy A. Nash, Commander of the Eighth Coast Guard District for the trip up the Mississippi River, where the USCG Eagle docked at the Bienville Wharf. The USCG Eagle is among several tall ships and other military vessels that will be open to the public for tours this week.
Councilmember Clarkson will be participating in a variety of events to celebrate Navy Week as well as being a member of the Navy Week Host Committee and Honorary Chair of the War of 1812 Gala to be held on Friday night at the National World War II Museum. She said, “I am very proud and honored to be part of this wonderful celebration as the military is one of the platforms that has been closest to my heart during my career in public service.”
NOLA Navy Week is a kickoff to a three year commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 that will also end in New Orleans in 2015. For information on this week’s schedule of events, visit www.NOLANavyWeek.com or www.OurFlagWasStillThere.com
