New Orleans, LA. – February 27, 2009 – Council President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson will join leaders of Lakewood Country Club this morning for the grand reopening of the celebrated Lakewood Golf Course on the Westbank of New Orleans.
The course, originally constructed in 1961, was once a premier golf course in Louisiana, hosting 26 New Orleans Opens. On the verge of bankruptcy in 2003, the facility and surrounding land was purchased by the New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund. Since that time, the course has undergone an extensive $9 million renovation. This development is only the first phase in a master plan that calls for an upscale golf resort, a 4-star luxury hotel, condominiums and more.
Clarkson was instrumental in the development of Lakewood during her term as District “C” Councilmember and has remained involved as Councilmember-at-Large.
